What have I done?

This morning at the bus stop I offered to start taking a Kindergartener in the morning. His mother was there for the first time and I was thrilled there was another mom to talk to. Unfortunately, she starts a new job on Monday.

It was her first time taking Isaiah to the bus stop and she was surprised how dangerous it is. (I watch Isaiah almost every morning run around and not listen to the high schooler that's supposed to be babysitting him.) I told her that even though Sam's in second grade I go with him every morning and make him stand away from the bus stop. (As evidenced during our conversation, Sam was the only kid a decent distance from the busy road.) I was actually happy she was concerned because I always wondered why she didn't walk with him in the morning when I knew she wasn't working.

Anyway, I told her she could drop him by our house in the mornings on her way to work and he could walk with Sam, Ralphie and me. Now I'm wondering if Isaiah will listen to me any better than he listens to the other babysitters. I hope so. I think I'm meaner.

Please, let it be tired.

I'm having a problem with my eyes again, I keep losing focus. The same thing happened to me when Sam was a baby. I went and got glasses but a few months later my eyes were fine. I blamed it on being tired and having a job where I just stared at computer screens all day.

Well, it's the same thing. I can't hardly pluck my eyebrows. I can't read directions on packages and I can't read my books. If I rub my eyes I get a few seconds before I lose my focus again. At night, I just read by guessing what the words are.

I don't know if that's how one loses vision. I thought things just got fuzzy and you couldn't see anymore. Not that you could see them for a few seconds and then it felt like your eyes were crossing.

Anyway, I spent ridiculous amount on two pairs of designer glasses when Sam was a baby but when I moved to TX they never made the trip. I didn't care because I didn't need them anymore. I've decided I'm either getting old and need glasses or I'm just tired and need to rest. I really wish more sleep helped.

Now I'm trying to make an appt at the optometry clinic and not having any luck. I called about a month ago and they were booked. They told me to call back and try again in a few weeks. I called today but they're closed on Wednesdays. Of course. That's how it always is. If I show up to get the baby vaccinated it's always on a day the immunizations clinic is closed. Whatever. Thank you military health system.

Oh baby!

My little baby is turning in to a big terror. He's a crawling machine that recently learned how to pull himself up.

He's in to everything and if I thought I didn't get much rest before, it's worse now.

He sprouted several new teeth since Barcelona, he now has six.

Soon, he won't be a baby anymore.

And? We're still fighting The Garmisch Gurgles.

The Garmisch Gurgles

The inlaws just left on Sunday. It was fun having them but I'm happy to have the house back to normal.

We all went to Garmisch, Germany, for a few days while they were here. Yago and I were concerned that his brother and fiancee would be bored sitting around the house in January so we booked some rooms at Edelweiss. It was wonderful. Yago's parents had an adjoining room and it turned out better than you might think since it wasn't planned that way.

His parents volunteered to watch Ralphie so the rest of us could all ski together. I feel like I finally learned to ski and Sam did great. We didn't stick to bunny slopes this time, we went down actual runs. Like real skiers! It was the family ski trip I've been trying for years to achieve. It was really, really fun. Even the accidental detour was funny--afterward. And the, "No pizza! No pizza!" I'd have to explain that in person, it just wouldn't be funny on the blog.

It seems Schmitty and I came home with a stomach virus of some sort. Schmitty's is REALLY bad. He's spent most of the last couple of days either curled up in a ball or on the toilet. My tummy hurts, but not as bad as his. Yago dubbed our condition "The Garmisch Gurgles."

That's about all that's been going on over the past week or so...

Barcelona

I should talk a litte about our trip but I'm not really sure what to say. We had a nice time, went to the aquarium, zoo, Guell Parc and La Sagrada Familia. We ate tapas and drank sangria.

One thing about Barcelona, there aren't any high chairs. That makes it a little complicated for those traveling with babies. Also? Restaurants are hard to come by. Especially family restaurants. On New Year's Eve and Day.

We had a good breakfast at a place across from the train station and went back for dinner on NYE. We were served pork tripe. Yago and I choked down a couple of pieces but Sam loved it. Said it was the best pork he'd ever had. Hmph.

Oh! I almost forgot my ROOKIE mistake. I still can't believe I did it. I ordered hamburguesas for Sam at a restaurant. I saw hamburguesas on the menu, they came with fried eggs and potatoes. I asked the waiter for a hamburguesa and papas fritas thinking I'd get those items a la carte. Not so. Out comes a plate with two hamburger patties (sans buns), two fried eggs and fried potatoes. Jason insisted I didn't know Spanish and hamburguesa must really mean breakfast. I spent the rest of the trip having him nag me every morning not to be late for hamburguesa. I should have remembered that hamburgers don't come with buns!!!

The choices...

For some reason I feel the need to write about the primaries. Yago keeps asking what I see in Clinton, looking for an explanation of her appeal. I can't really give an answer but I've been mulling it around for about a week or so.

I think it's because she's what I wish I could have been. I don't like to whine about the gender gap and all but it does exist. I know it and she knows it.

I didn't give it much thought until I got out of the military and saw people less qualified than me getting paid more. Men (one man in particular, Dwight Cole) used to sleep on the job but was favored over me by management. I was his shift supervisor but he made the same pay. I was appalled.

I think back to when I was an A1C. During shift change, everyone was at the table doing change over and my supervisor (Nate) and another NCO (Denny) were talking about something they saw on TV. My supervisor said it was evidence all women were whores. No one said anything, including myself, because who wants to be that person? The one whining about equal treatment. It's a label you'll never get rid of.

When you're a woman you can't be too pretty or too ugly. Your hair has to be a certain way. Men just wear it short but women have to do something else. You have to look polished but not severe. You can't wear too much makeup but you have to wear some. You can't be silly but you have to have a sense of humor. You have to directive but not bitchy. Friendly but not flirtatious... These are all difficult things to navigate. It can be done but it's not easy. She knows.

Also, I remember when she published the book It Takes a Village. I was trying to raise Sam and depended heavily on my family. It did take a village. I remember 15 years ago when she was pushing for health care reform, this is not a new platform for her just because she's running for president.

I admire her ambition from a young age. She worked on the Watergate hearings. I never would have had the confidence to put myself out there in my 20s. Hell, not now in my mid 30s. She had a very successful career at Rose Law Firm (I think that was the name of it). She had bigger ambitions though that she gave up to live in Arkansas with Bill so that he could run for Attorney General and Governor.

She's worked and raised a daughter and sacrificed for her husband's career. I'm sure she's had to miss some of Chelsea's moments and regretted the time away. Men miss things too but I don't think it sticks to their conscience the way it does with women. I think we're wired that way.

Her mother lives with her. Again, I can relate. I see it as another issue she has direct experience with.

While I love Obama also, I feel like Clinton knows more about my life. I wish they could both win because I find myself rooting for them both. I think they could both do extraordinary things.

A traveling we will go...

Tomorrow we'll be on our way to Barcelona. I'm glad we're going but rethinking spending a week there. A week is too long almost anywhere, except maybe Disney World. I love Disney World.

I'm supposed to be showering but had to post quickly because I won't have the opportunity again for a week or so.

We had a great Christmas. Sammy made his Christmas list on Christmas Eve, not a good idea for any little boy or girl. Luckily, Santa already planned on getting him about half of what was on there. Unfortunately, he was a little low on "suit to make me invisible" and "robot to do my chores." Santa also forgot to make sure he left batteries for the all-important RoboSapien. Darn Santa. Dad went out this morning and got the batteries, so all is well.

It was a really good Christmas. Schmitty came in our room at 4:30 and asked if he could open presents yet. I sent him back to bed until 6:00 but then Yagopuchae decided he was awake and we might as well get up. Hmph. I can't complain too much, he did make dinner. We had a tasty roast and relaxing day.

We went to the local Christmas market on the 23rd, it was bittersweet because it was our last. We only got to go to one this year and we only went once. Christmas markets are a highlight of the season. There are food booths serving local specialties (sausages on fresh, crusty rolls) and gluhwein. There are also local gifts for sale. Little toys and trinkets, it's all very quaint and gives you the happy holiday spirit that you don't get shoving your way through a packed mall looking for a bargain. Maybe the gluhwein contributes to the happy feeling...

Anyway, off to Spain tomorrow. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and has a Happy New Year!

Am I Wrong?

I think it's wrong that I wish the F-15E was grounded or in danger of falling apart midflight.

Finally

Yes, Yagopuchae is finally back!! I would post a picture of him at the PAX terminal but I forgot my camera, of course. His commander and a person who I think is the squadron deployment guy were there too.

He got back about 8:00 Saturday morning. We're all so happy to have him home, things feel normal again. Or at least as "normal" as they were before. Yago took Schmitty out bowling for a man afternoon and I'm making some apple cobbler stuff with the angry baby.

Well, maybe I'll post more tomorrow because I'm also done with work for FY 08!!!

What a Break

Well, tomorrow is my last day of work. I'm pretty excited about that. I worked with some really interesting guys, I was the only girl representing A6. It was fun.

Ralphie has been sick and is very congested but I'm hoping once he's out of the CDC he'll be back to his normal self.

I'm exhausted and going to bed. There was a lot I was going to write about but I think I'd rather go to sleep. Hopefully, Yagopuchae is starting his trek home. Which reminds me, one of the guys at work wore a Star Trek tie tack last week. I've given him endless crap about it ever since. How funny. It looked like he sent in $3.95 and four UPC symbols off of a cereal box.

Oh. And I took my PT test, I scored an 88.75. That's my personal best so I'm happy with it. (75 is passing, I think)

Cliche

I know it's cliche but it occurred to me that I didn't post anything that I'm thankful for...

I am thankful for my family. All of it.

I'm thankful for my friends. Both of them.

I'm thankful that I don't have to work anymore. (Except the next three weeks.) It's now someone else's job to make sure Sam doesn't have to sleep with the bugs.

A Home Gym

So, I haven't posted in a long time but I've been working and blogger is blocked at work.

In my office the guys all do pushups and situps about 3 times a day. I do about 25 of each and I've been trying to jog 3 times a week. I didn't realize how much I missed moving around until I started again. I feel great afterward, not always during. ANYWAY. When I change clothes at the gym I can totally see my abs and from a distance it looks good. The problem is, when I get home I can't see anything. It's something with the lights at the gym so I wish I could bring home the gym lights. It'd really be good for my self-esteem.

Dazed and Confused

I woke up this morning at 7:00, way late. I usually start hitting snooze at 6:00 and get out of bed at 6:30. When I opened my eyes and saw it was 7:00 I panicked. From my bed I yelled, "Laurie! Laurie! We're late, get up!" I kept shouting, "Laurie!" knowing it wasn't right. I was looking at Sam's bedroom, envisioning his face but I couldn't think of what name I should have been calling. Isn't that funny? It finally came to me, but the fact that I woke up shouting, "Laurie!" amused me.

The Great Pumpkin

We went to a pumpkin patch on Monday with some cub scouts. We had a really good time running around a corn maze and eating lunch together.

Whew.

I worked last week and all I can say is, "Whew." It was nice being back in a work environment with adults and whatnot but I don't know I couldn't do it on a permanent basis. It's way too hard to do anything at home.

Everday my house would get a little messier and I'd think I'd fix it that night but there was never time. I'd be so stressed out if I stayed in the AF, I wouldn't enjoy anything. I kind of feel like this way I can have my cake and eat it too. It'll only be a few weeks of work but I'll get to talk to people and meet different people and then know that when it's over I can go back to taking care of things at home.

I'd say it's a pretty good arrangement. Now if I could just get the husband home...

I'll spare you the picture... for now.

I went rollerskating with Sammy last night and forgot my camera. Why do I keep doing that? I charge it and then forget to bring it. ...But that's not the picture I'm talking about.

The skate was for kids of deployed parents. I went expecting to watch (and listen) to Sam whine all evening but someone generously offered to keep an eye on Ralphie so I could skate with Schmitty. I nervously donned my skates, something I hadn't done in many many years.

We got out there and after a couple laps of wall hanging he agreed to hold my hand. We zipped around the rink but eventually my luck ran out. I fell right on my kiester. I forgot how much that hurts... Anyway, I'm sure it'll bruise up nicely and that's the picture I will spare you all.

We had a really good time, it was the first time in a long time that I got to interact with Sam without Ralphie taking priority. I think it was important, I forgot how much fun we have sometimes. I even told him maybe we could go back just the two of us when Dad gets home. He was pleased, he thought Dad had to be deployed for us to do that.

What the Heck??

I just came home from Schmitty's football practice. I spent the hour laughing and talking to the other parents. As I was logging in to Blogger I realized my shirt is unbuttoned from the chest down. I've been walking around since God knows when with my shirt unbuttoned from Ralphie's last feeding!!! I'm completely *Agh* I can't even think of the right word! Well, I'm sure all the ladies enjoyed the peeps at my white fleshy belly.

Yagopuchae ordered me some fair trade coffee. I haven't been able to try it yet because I have to use up the rest of our unfair trade coffee first. I'd just like to validate my addiction to Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream by saying they use fair trade coffee.

I'd also like to blame Mickity and StuckinMD for falling off the wagon. The Ben & Jerry's wagon. Mickity got me back in to eating ice cream with her proclamation of Creme Brulee yumminess. I thought it was innocuous enough since I couldn't buy it in Germany. But then StuckinMD reminded me of my Coffee Heath Bar Crunch habit and I just bought one little pint... What could go wrong? Unfortunately, I started looking for reasons to go to the commissary and I couldn't pass up a pint of ice cream. Each time I promised myself I would only have a scoopful per serving. But every night one thing would lead to another and I'd be scraping the bottom of the container wishing I had more. Thanks.

It's been almost two weeks since I've had any but I think about it every time I stop by the commissary.

Runaway Fingers

I read my last post and wonder what the heck my fingers were doing when my brain was telling the what they were SUPPOSED to be typing. Holy crap, I sound like a retard. Whatever, I'm always in a hurry with the background "music" provided by Ralphie. I'm lucky anything makes it to the keyboard.

I thought of something cool that I could send Yago today but I didn't write it down and now for the life of me I can't remember what I was going to fill the box with. Hmmm.

Disruptions...

I haven't been able to blog or email much because I moved Ralphie's "crib" in to the computer room in hopes of a better night's sleep. Now when he naps and sleeps it's in the office. That's when I normally would used the computer, when it was quiet. Hence, no emails or blog entries.

Little Ralphie has a cold, poor guy. He tries to eat and blows snot in and out. Very gross since he's still nursing. I've been trying to get him to take a bottle more with mixed results. We was doing all right until he got sick.

Anyway, I had plenty of amusing antecdotes but can't remember any of them now. I'd better go watch Judge Judy, er, I mean do some housework.

The Green Green Grass of Home

I realized last week the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Again.

I've been kind of looking forward to a chance to work again, even if it's as a Reservist. I fantasized about interacting with people where the commonality wasn't our children. Our children wouldn't be the foundation of all our conversations. I could interact with people that would make jokes and perhaps even pull a prank.

Then I went to put Ralphie on the CDC waiting list.. Later that day I watched him start to doze in his carseat and he was so adorable. I didn't want to leave him with anyone else. I didn't want him to have a day separate from mine, if that makes sense. I didn't want to fret about what or how he was doing. Was he upset? Crying? Screaming?

It's good to have a reminder every now and again that I made the right decision to get out of the AF, even if I did give up A LOT of money over my lifetime.

Of course it's easy to say now because Ralphie's sleeping...
